About Arie Vanderwyst

I was born in Holland in the same province as Vincent van Gogh. I don’t know if that had any influence on me as such, but I did love his work and the unique way he had of putting so many colours on the canvas and yet, as if by magic, it still emerged as a landscape, a boat or a chair. I thought that was really amazing. I love working on a large canvas because I can achieve more detail as you can see in the portraits I have done of famous people. But all kinds of sizes I’m pretty much okay with because of my attention to details.  You could say I’m a self-taught artist, although I do have a degree in commercial drawing and painting. I was partially trained to be an art teacher, had my own company as a sculptor and model maker for 18 years, love graphic design and building websites (including this one) but my love for painting has always been my favourite form of art. These last few years I’ve added another way of creating paintings and this is digital painting. For this I use a Wacom digital drawing tablet and I really love it. This is all about working on the computer with the help of a digital pen and a tablet and a program like Photoshop to get the image on the screen. Although this sounds very clinical in a way, but I try to stay as close to the traditional way of painting as possible by using digital brushes that imitate the feel and look of a painting on canvas. Have a look at my gallery to see what I mean.  I live in England now but am delighted to do commissioned work from anywhere in the world, so please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like something special for yourself or a loved one. Both mediums for commissions, traditional or digital are possible.
